iPhone 3G Baseband can be downgraded!

Hot news for those who have a Bootloader 5.8 iPhone 3G (i.e. purchased before September 2008) and who have accidentally upgraded to Apple’s 2.2.1 and hence got baseband 2.30.03. This of course can presently be unlocked with a piggyback sim, but comes with the caveats that all piggyback sims have.
Due to an exploit found in the bootloader, the baseband on these particular iPhone 3G models can be downgraded! If you have one of these iPhones and wish to downgrade the baseband to 2.28.00 and hence be software unlocked, simply contact support@iphoneunlockuk.com who will assist you (provided you have purchased an unlock package from them of course).

Hi, I bought an iphone3g 2.2 16GB in Bangkok and accidently updated the firmware to 2.2.1. How can I unlock it with software ?
We are producing a GUI tool in the next couple of days that can check whether you have the correct bootloader and hence can downgrade the baseband. If you can’t you’ll have to use the piggyback sim. If you purchase the software it will be in your account.
