3G iPhone

Apple has announced (not expectedly!) the new 3G iPhone, which will be available in the UK from 11th July, still tied to the o2 network. This time around, you will need to sign a contract in store if you want to get hold of the phone very cheaply (free if you take out the largest contract for instance), but of course you’ll be tied into a contract.

HOWEVER, o2 will also sell a Pay as You Go version of the iPhone for the same price as the old one (£269) which we will be able to unlock shortly after the iPhones release for use on other networks – this is the version our customers should purchase as they won’t need to be tied into the expensive contract and will continue to be able to use the network of their choice.

Should I upgrade to the new iPhone 3G

The difference between the old iPhone running iPhone 2.0 software and the new 3G one is purely cellular data speeds and GPS – everything else is identical – the applications they support, the capacities on offer – so if you’re not a really heavy surfer on the go then there is really no need to go through the expense of upgrading right now, we’d recommend holding off until a 32GB version of the 3G iPhone is available before considering an upgrade.

Of course that shiny new gadget may be impossible to resist but at least hang on until our software is compatible as the iPhone 3G has a new bootloader, we confirmed this in San Francisco at the keynote.

Has anyone bought a 3G iPhone in the states ($199 for the 8Gb and $299 for the 16Gb versions) and availed of AT&T’s $175 contract cancellation fee?

That would make the total cost about $375 for the 8GB or $475 (€305 or £240) for the 16GB – which would seem pretty good.

    Has anyone tried this?

    jody,

I managed to retire my 3g using the custom ipsw file, but when I try different network sim cards all I get is “invalid sim” flashing quickly where the o2 normally is and then just getting a line of dots, so not picking up the network signal, do I need to try again or do you have issues with the firmware??? Thanks

    Regards

Hi just wondering, on ishop you can buy a iphone for £169 , will i be able to use this phone in the uk without fidiling about with it?

Don’t buy from iShop – its the biggest scam going. And you certainly won’t be able to use it in the UK.

Hi Jody – does this mean that we will be able to buy a 3G iPhone PAYG 16GB [or 32GB by that time maybe, fingers crossed!] and get it unlocked using your software around September? I ask because I’d heard that O2 may require 6 months of PAYG top-ups upfront. Don’t see how that can work to be honest, but it’s the rumour I’d heard.

I wouldn’t mind taking about a £35 O2 contract because they are quite good value but the O2 call quality and signal strength is rubbish where I live, so I’ve got to stick with Orange.

I bought an iphone or carphone website yesterday. They told me by email today that o2 needed a £150 deposit because of a bad credit check. I rang o2, they knew nothing about it. I checked my credit rating with experian is good. I rerang o2, they said it was carphone, I rang carphone they said it was o2. They the chap at carphone said I had to pay an extra £150, no choice. I said I did have a choice, I told him to shove it where the sun don’t shine, shysters. I can wait for them to become more freely available. I am surprised that Apple want to be associated with fraudulent small companies like carphone.

I have the same question as Yvonne. Would i be able to buy 3G iPhone in US, unlock it and use it with my PAYG sim card here in UK?
    Thank you.

Hi all – you can’t buy a 3G iPhone in the US without a contract. You will need to wait for o2 to release their PAYG version for £299 in September and then unlock it.

I am going to the US this week and hoping to buy the new 3G iPhone there. Any idea if I can do this without signing up to a contract? Will you able to unlock this one (obviously given necessary time)? Thanks

    Hi All

Just enquired about the 3G iPhone in Carphone Warehouse. I know they credit check you, they done one and would need to pay £150 deposit but couldn’t confirm if the same applies for iPhone – how does the new one work – activate at home and credit check or credit check done instore and activated and then activated at home on iTunes?
    Thanks

If you buy a PASYG iphone will you be able to use the WiFi on it forever or just six months as stated? I would have thought you could use it forever but blurb says otherwise. Also would I be able to put any sim card on it?
Hi – you’ll be able to use Wifi on it forever. The limited data it is referring to is EDGE

    Hi All,

Reference the MS Exchange integration, i hope that the iPhone 2.0 or 3G does not suffer the same issues that all other ActivSync users suffers. Please read this: http://www.themssforum.com/Entourage/Entourage-garbled-87798/

Some how i think it will as it seems to an issue with ActiveSync running across MS Exchange and Entourage 2004 & 2008 on Mac.

Basicually, all sent item sent from an ActiveSync device (Windows Mobile device, Nokia wih Mail for Exchange + i strongly suspect iPhone with MS Exchange support) over an Exchange server with a user using Entourage 2004 or 2008 will see all sent items sent from these devices as garbled message under the sent items in Entourage 2004 or 2008.

A known issue for Microsoft, I just hope Apple can put some pressure on to sort it out.

    Nick

Hi Ben – we tried to get in the pre-order queue yesterday but the o2 website borked, as we need one to give to our ARM developer. Until we have one, there’s no way of knowing.

I understand that the 3G iPhone will have a push email (via 02)system similar to BlackBerry for up to 10 email addresses. Will this be supported on other networks, ie Vodafone? Or will it be possible to import another push system on to the iphone?

Can the 3G iphone Bluetooth detect other devices other than apple?

The bluetooth in the iPhone is purely used for communicating with headsets.

    June 16, 2008 at 3:55 pm

forgive my limited knowledge with the iphone, but can the new iphone 3G send and receive mms?

Hi Aziz – it can’t, and for good reason. MMS is an awful invention of the carriers, sending very bad quality images from device to device for an extortionate cost. Instead the iPhone sends perfect quality images via email, which is great if the person you are sending to has an iPhone. And people who send you MMS you can still get via the web on the iPhone (you get given a link). You simply can’t SEND MMS. MMS is a very very bad thing, and needs to die.

as the new iphone is 3G does this mean I will be able to use my three contract sim on a unlocked version?

Hi Martin – sadly no, because Three uses non-standard sims (the only network in the world to do so).

Hi, are you sure about the price 269quid for the PAYG option? Because i am living in the Caribbean, and i have visitors coming August and i thats the only way i can get my iPhone 3G as PAYG is not avaiable in America and also they’re making it extremely hard to buy them without signing up. But at 269 i can afford it, but if it goes to 400 quid or so its going to be a lot of money to put down!

    Need advice lol!

And also, wen do u think o2 will release the prices of the PAYG iPhone 3G?

    Thanks, Most appreicated

Hi. I am using entourage but I have currently got a blackberry on T Mobile, and have had nothing but trouble. I want the new 3G phone. Will the blackberry enterprise work and will you be able to unlock the 3G phone.

Blackberry email only works on blackberry phones (obviously!) If your company email uses Exchange for its email servers then the iPhone will do Push email, also Apple do consumer Push email in the form of MobileMe. We will be able to unlock the 3G iPhone, but not immediately, worse case scenario it will may take a couple of months to hack.

Me again, You have stated the the PAYG deal for the 3G iPhone will be £269.00 but O2 have not set a price yet? Do you have some inside knowledge? or just estimating?

If its not £269 I bet that England will win Euro 2008 ;-)

Hi…. will the 3G iPhone be able to be used on the 3 Mobile network?

No – 3 sim cards are non-GSM standard, and are incompatible with every other network on the planet.

    Thanks guys

Hi Khalid – we’ll be able to unlock it for sure, its just a matter of time.

Hi, mention that the only difference between the new iphone and the older one is the data transmission speeds. From looking at the specs for the new one at the apple website it would suggest that the new one has GPS builtin? does that mean the older iphone has it too and that it will be enabled by the newer software? thanks

Hi Carl – you are correct, the new iPhone DOES have GPS built in, the old one only has an approximation of GPS. Thanks for pointing this out.
